Is Your Garden Ready For Fall?

Fall Cleanup Tasks

Learn how to prepare your garden for fall.

Summer is quickly coming to an end, which means the weather will be cooling down over the next few months.  This means that you have to prepare your garden for the change in temperatures. There are some plants and foliage that do not thrive in the fall as they do in the spring and summer.  When it comes to gardening in the fall, it is all about caring for your plants and soil so that they survive the winter.  Luckily, there are few simple tips to preparing your lawn for fall.

Examine and Replace

The first thing you need to do to prepare your garden for fall is to walk around and examine it closely.  You need to see how each plant held up over the summer, specifically the annuals. You need to look for bare patches of soil that need to be fertilized and plants that need to be divided due to overgrowth.  This is the time to move any plants, such as herbs, into a window box to expose them to sunlight. You should also examine all of your perennials for disease. Depending on the severity of the disease, you can just prune the plant, or you might have to remove it entirely.  You will have to prune your plants depending on where you live. East Coast residents will have to prune their foliage before West Coast homeowners because it gets colder on the East Coast, especially the more north you go.

Add Fertilizer and Mulch

Right now is the perfect time to add soil amendments, such as fertilizer and mulch, to your soil because growing plants have depleted many of the nutrients in the soil.  Chemical fertilizers are efficient at feeding each of your plants directly. However, organic options, such as mulch and compost release nutrients directly into the soil slowly.  Work each type of soil amendment into the soil with a gardening fork. You want to make sure that the areas with no plants are covered fully with fertilizer. Remember to till the soil in areas that are bare, and remove any roots as well.
