Russell (Russ) Irvin is a third-generation co-owner/principal member of TDH. He started working with his father Richard (Dick) back in high school and officially joined the family business in 1982. What began in 1965 as TDH Nurseries and Landscaping has now blossomed into four successful yet distinct companies under Russ’ direction: TDH Landscaping; TDH Nurseries; TDH Equipment Leasing; and most recently, TDH Construction and Renovations Russ’ forward-thinking resulted in TDH Landscaping being one of the first landscaping firms in Maryland to utilize H2B employees (seasonal recruitment), with many of our H2B staff celebrating 15 years with us!
Russ’ interest in architecture and design resulted in the development of TDH Construction and Renovation His keen eye for detail and artistic ability has allowed him to incorporate various designs or structures found throughout his travels abroad and at home into designs for customers. His other interest is photography, which can be seen in many of the photos on the TDH website.
Russ is a huge proponent of giving back to the community and encourages his staff to volunteer or mentor in their areas of interest. TDH Landscaping regularly donates to non-profit fundraisers, either through monetary donations or landscape design. Russ leads by example through his countless hours of community service in the motorcycle arena. A huge animal lover, Russ loves to bring Christmas gifts to the local animal shelter – buying presents for all the animals still waiting for their forever homes.
His down time is typically spent with his wife Cheri and their son Tim racing Motocross. Russ’ passion for motorcycles has lead him to be involved in various organizations as either a member or a board member for over twelve years. He is currently Vice-President of the AMA District 7, Member of the Baltimore County Trail Riders Association and Delegate for the National Congress for the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association), volunteering countless hours to promote the sport he loves. Before motocross, Russ volunteered as a coach on his son’s Rec soccer teams.

Richard (Dick) Irvin didn’t always want to be a landscape entrepreneur. Back in his youth, after graduating from Washington College with a psychology degree, Dick, an avid golfer, decided to pursue a golf career. But like many dreams of our youth, his desire for a golf career took a back seat after getting married and starting a family. After a year of trying to make it as a golf professional, Dick decided to make a go at Landscaping. Dick worked for several landscape firms in the area, learning the business until he started his own company, RI Landscaping, in 1961. Combining his knowledge of landscaping and his passion and reputation as a semi-pro golfer, Dick was instrumental in designing the Black Horse Golf Course located in White Hall, Maryland.
Harry Irvin, after seeing his son Dick's success in the landscaping business, decided to expand the business by purchasing a rundown dairy farm in Baltimore County in 1965. Dick’s brother Tom joined his father and brother in the business, creating the acronym TDH. The business started out small, selling plants, perennials and small bushes. It would take Dick 3 years to clear the once overgrown 40-acre dairy farm on a Gravely tractor before the Nursery could truly expand. Today, TDH Nurseries has over 80 acres of property and is a premier nursery in Maryland, servicing many local landscape companies. Although Dick no longer manages the day-to-day operations of the nursery, you can still see him riding around in the fields, overseeing the property and working alongside the guys.
