When Is the Best Time of the Year to Plant Trees and Shrubs?

Trees and Shrubs

Should you plant your trees and shrubs this spring, or wait until fall?

Spring is in full bloom and you may be thinking about adding some additional trees or shrubs to your landscape. However, there is a lot of conflicting information out there about the best time to plant them. Some experts claim that spring is the ideal season for planting while others say fall is the best time. In truth, there are advantages and disadvantages to planting trees and shrubs for each season. A professional landscaping company like TDH Landscaping can give you more information about the unique needs of individual plant species, but here are some general guidelines to consider.

Spring Planting

Planting trees and shrubs in the spring may seem like the best course of action. After all, nurseries are fully stocked during this time, so it would make sense that their young plants are meant to be planted in the spring. Spring planting gives trees and shrubs plenty of time to develop their root systems and grow in anticipation of winter.

However, this approach does require a more thorough approach towards watering and care. The Mid-Atlantic summer can be brutally tough on newly planted trees and shrubs, and these plants will need to receive enough water to support root development as well as leaf growth. If you can keep up with the maintenance needs during the summer, planting trees and shrubs in the springtime is a great idea.

Fall Planting

On the other hand, some experts advocate for planting trees and shrubs in the autumn. Since leaves fall during this time, the plants won’t require as much watering – they’ll simply need enough for root development. However, this approach can also be risky. The plants will need to develop an adequate root structure before the cold winter sets in. Waiting to plant until the fall shortens the amount of time your trees have to grow these roots. In addition, nurseries tend not to have as much stock available during the fall, as you might expect.
